About the Artist
George Deem (American, b. 1932-2008 in Vincennes, Indiana) was known for making art about art. Working famous images from art history into his own compositions from the Renaissance to the modern era by the likes of Caravaggio, Chardin, Ingres, Homer, Matisse, Picasso, and Vermeer; he re-interpreted these works in a way that was distinctly his own. He held a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and was the author of several books including “How to Paint a Vermeer: A Painter’s History of Art” (Thames & Hudson, 2004).
